China was the earliest of the East Asian countries to develop culturally and technologically, and with its great size and huge population, it was the dominant power in the region.

The origins of much that is characteristic of East Asian culture can be traced back to China. In many respects, China was to the countries of East Asia what ancient Greece and Rome were to the countries of Europe, the source of their shared classical world.
